Top 10 Rain Songs in Bollywood

By Esha Khan - BollySpice.com
3 Sep 2007
Rain has been linked to Indian cinema since the very beginning of the film industry. It's the one element that can be used to portray a variety of emotions and interesting situations. Whether it's symbolized to show romance or heartbreak. To depict sensuality or just simple playfulness, rain is that single element that can successfully captivate the viewer's imagination. It transports you to another world where it's just you, the characters and the beauty of the monsoon rain.

It can't be denied that rain evokes a certain sense of allure and fascination. The aesthetic beauty of it remains unmatched till this day. It's one of the main things the industry is famous for. When one thinks of Bollywood they think of an elated sari-clad heroine dancing in the rain in stunning locales. To this day it epitomizes that and so much more!

We take a look at 10 of the most interesting rain sequences from yesteryears to the most recent times and give a special mention to a few that unfortunately did not make the countdown.

10) Hum Tum - Hum Tum (2004)

'Saanson ko saanson main dhalne do zaraa
Dheemi si dhadkhan ko bharne do zaraa
Lamho ki guzarish hai yeh
Paas aa jaye.. Hum.. Hum Tum'

With music by Jatin-Lalit and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi, this romantic number was destined to be a success. For a romantic song as this, a romantic pair were definitely needed and who better then the hit pairing Rani and Saif? Rhea and Karan wander the streets on a rainy night, it was on this night that she realises her feelings for him. The song then takes us to various scenarios that she imagines herself in, which then ends with a kiss at the beach. The rain here is a symbolization of the feelings not yet expressed between the two, but the audience understood the words unsaid.

9) Barso Re - Guru (2007)

'Barso re megha megha.. Barso re megha megha..
Barso re megha.. Barso
Meetha hai kosaa hai, baarish ka bosa hai
Kosaa hai kosaa hai.. Baarishon ka bosa hai'

One can't argue with the genius that is A.R. Rahman and when combined with renowned lyricist Gulzar you can do no wrong! This catchy rain number is enacted by none other than Aishwarya Bachchan. A free spirited Sujata dances freely and excitedly in the rain, enjoying the refreshing spray of the monsoon at the stunning backdrop of a huge, cascading waterfall. Looking at this song, one can't help but feel like joining her! The rain here is effortlessly used as a medium of showing infectious enthusiasm and looking at the brighter side of things.

8) Bhaage Re Mann - Chameli (2003)

'Beheta hai mann kahin, kahaan jaante nahin
Koyi rokle yahin..
Bhaage re mann kahin, aage re mann chala..
Jaane kidhar jaanu na..'

On a busy bustling road, there is a heavy downpour of rain. A high spirited Chameli takes great joy in this and happily dances along with the city goers. She beckons Aman to join her but to no avail. The song has a greater meaning as it shows that even the most unfortunate of people have simple pleasures in life, that transports them away from the hardships they face. Kareena plays her character with conviction and shows a myriad of emotions.

7) Jo Haal Dil Ka - Sarfarosh (1999)

'Jo haal dil ka idhar ho raha hai
Woh haal dil ka udhar ho raha hai
Jaane jaan dilon pe pyaar ka
Ajab sa asar ho raha hai'

A very under-rated song, but has just as much appeal as any other of it's time. The ace Aamir Khan matched with the gorgeous Sonali Bendre and the background of torrential rain gives this a considerable repeat value. Definitely a song to be reckoned with, not to mention that the 2 co-stars share an unusual but captivating chemistry. This is the typical 'dancing around trees in the rain' number that Bollywood is famous for, but we all secretly love it!

6)Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Main - Ajnabee (1974)

'Bheegi bheegi raaton main, meethi meethi baaton main
Aisi barsaaton main
Kaisa Lagta Hai?'

The gorgeous and daring Zeenat Aman and the dashing Rajesh Khanna dance at a rooftop in the rain and proclaim their love for each other. Zeenat Aman is famous for her rain numbers as one can see from the popular 'Hai Hai Yeh Majboori' from the multi starrer Roti, Kapda Aur Makaan. Their chemistry is sizzling, but one can't expect any less when you pair one of the most attractive jodi's of their time. Till this day this unforgettable song is remixed over and over again, but the original remains unsurpassed.

5) Kaante Nehi Katte - Mr. India (1987)

'Kaate nehi katte yeh din yeh raat
Kehni thi tumse jo dil ki baat
Lo aaj main kehta hoon..
I love you'

Sexy is probably not a word you would associate with Sri Devi, but here she has to be seen to be believed. She just leaves you wanting more! Arguably one of the most sexiest and dramatic songs in Bollywood, to this day there will be very few choreographed numbers that can match this. A few moments into the song, the signature thunder and lightning followed by the somewhat clichЁ¦d heavy rain begin and Sri Devi is at her sensual best.

4) Taal Se Taal Mila - Taal (1999)

'Saawan ne aaj to muchko bhigo diya
Hai meri laaj ne mujho dubo diya
Aisi lagi jhari.. sochoon main yeh khari
Kuch maine kho diya.. kya maine kho diya'

A.R Rahman makes it here once again in a pleasantly composed track, written by Anand Bakshi. A beautiful Aishwarya and her two friends drench themselves in the monsoon rain, unknowingly watched by a fascinated Akshaye. It is very common in a rain song to wear a sari (usually white) but here the leading actress does the next best thing and wears a white lehenga. Mansi catches the raindrops in her hands and plays in a lake with her friends in this light-hearted, melodious song.

3) Tip Tip Barsa Paani - Mohra (1994)

'Tip tip barsa paani
Paani ne aag lagayi
Aag lagi dil main to
Dil ko teri yaad ayi'

This famous song from Mohra gave the actress Raveena Tandon her title of 'Ravishing Raveena'. Dressed in a yellow sari she dances seductively in the rain and invites Akshay to join her, he finally gives in and they dance together. Raveena and Akshay's searing chemistry add to the ambience of this sexy number. Although 'Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast' was the show stealer, this song was never forgotten. And even today this video can be put on repeat!

2) Rhim Jhim Rhim Jhim - 1942 A Love Story (1993)

'Rhim jhim rhim jhim
Rhum jhum rhum jhum
Bheegi bheegi rutme
Tum hum.. hum tum.. chalte hai'

A beautiful song with a beautiful pair, the rain only adds to the innocent romance between Manisha and Anil Kapoor. What sets this romantic rain song apart from the others is that it is playful but never sexy, which is quite rare. But this doesn't make it any less appealing, this is definitely on par with the other great rain songs and equally as loved for all ages. Manisha douses herself in the rain as Anil joins her happily, in this sweet song penned by Javed Akhtar and composed by the legendary R.D Burman.

1) Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua - Shree 420 (1955)

'Pyar hua ikrar hua hai
Pyar se phir kyun darta hai dil
Kehta hai dil rastaa mushkil
Maloom nehi hai kaha manzil'

The most iconic and memorable rain song would have to go to the legendary Raj Kapoor and Nargis's 'Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua'. Raj Kapoor plays the lovable tramp in love with school teacher Nargis, directed by non other than Kapoor himelf. Their chemistry was so incredible that they had co-starred in 16 films together. Rumours were also rife that they were in love, to which many people confirmed was true! Possibly the most intriguing and touching sequence in this song would be when Nargis sings 'Main na rahoongi, tum na rahoge. Phir bhi rahegi nishaniyan'. The camera turns away to show 3 school children merrily walking down the street, they are recognized as Kapoor's own children. A stunning rain lashed sequence coupled with a legendary pair. What could be more perfect than this? This rain song sets the milestone, which many film makers have tried to copy but none have paralleled this song quite like the man himself, Mr. Raj Kapoor.

Special Mentions

Sadly many songs didn't make it to the top 10, but there are many that deserve a mention. One that is probably highly forgotten is 'Idhar Chala Main Udhar Chala' from Koi Mil Gaya, I can just hear a chorus of 'oh yeah!' from the reader!

Sushmita keeps up the trend of sari clad heroines dancing in the rain in 'Laga Prem Rog' from Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya.

A mention of rains songs wouldn't be complete until you mention Aaj Rapat Jaye from the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Namak Halal, it's loud but we still love it!

Who can forget the other rain song the striking Zeenat Aman is famous for, 'Hai Hai Yeh Majboori' from Roti Kapda Aur Makaan?

Yet another under rated Sonali Bendre number would be 'Saawan Bharse Tarse Dil' from Dahek.

Keeping up the trend is Priyanka Chopra in 'Barsaat Ke Din Aye' from Barsaat (possibly the only good thing about the whole movie, well for her male fan following anyway!)

The latest that can be added to the addition is from the Aamir-Kajol starrer Fanaa, Dekho Na. Electrifying chemistry, 2 extremely talented actors. Perfect.

Another forgotten song, (infact almost invisible) would be 'Dheere Dheere' from Kyun Ho Gaya Na,. Their chemistry may not have set the screen on fire but this romantic rain song captured in slow motion was endearing nonetheless.

And finally you have to mention a Yash Raj film or things just would not feel right, here we mention 2! 'Mere Khwabon Main Jo Aye' from Dilwale Dulhaniye Le Jayenge and 'Chak Dum Chak Dum' from Dil To Pagal Hain. Kajol and Madhuri in their respective songs are playful and high spirited and show other heroines exactly how it's done!

All in all Bollywood is full of rain songs, so much so that it has become a trademark. Let's hope this trademark continues!
