Deepa Mehta signs Preity for Heaven On Earth

Of late Preity Zinta has been gravitating towards a neo-realistic cinema. After working with Rituparno Ghosh and Jahnu Barua in The Last Lear and Har Pal, Preity's latest creative acquisition is none other than Deepa Mehta who has earlier worked with 'method' actresses like Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das.

Now in a sudden and unexpected move Deepa has finalized Preity Zinta to play the battered Punjabi wife in Heaven On Earth. Preity is over the moon. "I met Deepa a while back at the IIFA. She saw my film The Last Lear and loved it. I'm so glad I did this film. It has opened an entirely new door for me. I feel I'm born anew. Right now I'm hungering for a new kind of acting challenge. Doing Deepa's film is another step in the same direction. She's one director I've been longing to work with. When I read the script I said, this is it."

Deepa who decided to do this start-to-finish quickie before plunging into the Hollywood biggie Luna with John Abraham, Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman and Chris Cooper, was on the look-out for the right face, personality and approach for the role.

"And I think Preity is perfect!" says Deepa from Toronto where she's now preparing to shoot Heaven On Earth. "I first met Preity at IIFA earlier this year. I was stuck by her positivity and her hungering for opportunities to stretch herself as an actress. We talked about the real-life character of a Punjabi housewife who goes through the nightmare of domestic violence. Preity was keen. But the dates were a problem. They've now been worked out. And Preity is on."

The shooting for Deepa (and Preity's) first Punjabi film begins in October. But before that in the middle of September Preity will be attending a workshop in Toronto. "To understand and come to grips with the character's milieu and body language. I think Preity can look very very Punjabi," observes Deepa.

Preity Zinta is in a spot of trouble. She needs a child to play her in the earlier part of Jhanu Barua's Har Pal. But they are unable to find the right face.

Says Preity, "The problem is we need a little girl who not only resembles me but also has prominent dimples, and not just on one cheek. We've come across sweet little girls with one dimple. But since God has gifted me with dimples on both cheeks the hunt is on for a miniature Preity with the necessary holes in her cheeks."

Until the director finds the right face the shooting of the childhood portions is on hold. "And we've to find her fast," Preity is desperate. One option was Ayesha Kapoor from Black. "My God what a powerhouse performer!" says Preity. “She played the blind girl so convincingly. I've worked with the blind and I've seen them move their exactly cornea like Ayesha. But Ayesha's image after Black is too strong. What do we do? I really envy Manisha Koirala. In Khamoshi: The Musical. Sanjay Leela Bhansali found a girl who was not only a pint-sized replica of Manisha but also as talented."

As things stand the hunt is on for a twin-dimpled miniature Preity. "If we don't find her I'll have to play her myself," she jokes.

Preity Zinta talks to PT about rumours surrounding her and how her life changed with a near-death experience.

Acting is what she does, but Preity Zinta is happier being a concerned citizen these days. Ask her which of the two accolades she enjoyed more — being awarded a concerned citizen award or being voted as one of the most beautiful women in India?

"Phew! That’s a lot happening, eh? Well, I felt great when I got the award for my work outside cinema. It really did bring a smile to my face. It makes me proud to be recognised as a good citizen. Things did change for me quite a bit after the Tsunami. I almost died there and I lost some of my friends. And yes, facing death changes the way you look at life," says Preity philosophically.

However, that was not the first time PZ faced death. In fact, that year began on a very low note for her. "I almost lost my life when I had an accident while skiing. Then, I lost my dog and things just did not fall into place."

But for her, being low doesn’t mean that life will take a backseat. "I am a survivor. After every storm you will find me standing tall. The woods are lovely, dark and deep/I have miles to go before I sleep," she smiles as she quotes Robert Frost.

For PZ, beautiful is the deed she does and not what she looks like. "Yes, we all love compliments. But one must not forget that behind this beautiful face is the hard work of my make-up artist, my hairstylist and a photographer who takes amazing pictures. If people find me beautiful for what I look on the outside, well thanks. But what makes me more happy is when they appreciate my inner beauty," says Preity.

Preity will soon be seen in Deepa Mehta’s Heaven On Earth. "It’s too early to comment on it. All I can say is that it will take me to another level of acting. And, I give most of the credit to Rituda with whom I did The Last Lear, and Arjun Rampal who pushed me into doing it. I never looked westwards, this just happened by chance."

Another thing that recently happened to her by chance was a catfight rumour. "This is bizarre! I heard recently that Bipasha Basu and I are at loggerheads. What’s wrong with people? Bipasha is a very sweet girl and very sexy too. Why would we be fighting? I have heard the most bizarre rumours about myself. Once I was told that I had reportedly committed suicide!" she says with a hearty laugh.

With all the hype and hoopla that revolves around the Lakme India Fashion Week every year, this year was no different. Actors and models walked shoulder to shoulder (quite literally) setting the ramp on fire. Amongst all this fashion mayhem, what caught our attention was the pretty lass Preity Zinta strutting this message of ‘Say No To Plastic Bags’ with utmost ease, something that comes naturally to her.

But, with the kind of frank-‘Ness’ that this lady sports, we feel that she should go a step further and sport another message (exclusively for the film stars and the Page 3 socialites) stating ‘Say No To Plastic Smiles’ through this event.

Preity-Ness in Shillong together

If you saw Preity Zinta dimpling more prettily this past weekend it's because she got to be with her soul-mate Ness Wadia in Shillong for the whole weekend. "He's just left," she says. "And it was a good holiday for him while I was working my butt off for Jahnu Barua's Har Pall."

Over the weekend Preity also had one of her dreams come true. She attended a concert by one of her favourite rock bands Mr Big and also got invited on stage by the band's lead singer Eric Martin. "On Saturday evening I was told Mr Big were performing in town. I was like….wow! I grew up listening to their songs like ‘Wide World’ and ‘Just To Be With You’. I decided, come what may, I had to go attend the concert."

Excited as a school girl Preity re-lived some of her favourite 1980s' songs and danced in aisles. But the thrill wasn't over. Mid-way through the concert, Mr Big stopped short in their tantalizing tracks to announce they've a very special guest at the concert. "And to my utter delight and embarrassment Mr Big announced my name and asked me to come on stage. I died. Man, what a moment! I felt like a school girl out on her first date. It was what one calls a magical moment."

Preity had a ball, while Ness was happy to see his lady enjoy herself. Back in her hotel in Shillong, Preity had another surprise waiting for her. "I discovered Mr Big's villa is right next to mine. So I had Ness and one of my favourite teen dreams next to me. Who knows what will happen next? With all this excitement I find it very hard to concentrate on my work."

Preity Zinta Lives By Her Own Standards

Preity Zinta known for her talent and beauty is a tough girl and a crusader. She lives by the rules that she makes for herself, spurning away ones made by others. “Looking good makes one feel good” she says. And so, she loves looking good, and doesn’t mind splurging for it. “I work very hard. And so if I indulge in something that makes me feel good and look good, I think it’s worth it,” she says. For Preity, indulgence is nothing to feel guilty about. “You can only know the value of indulging in something when you have worked hard to earn it. It’s like that ad tagline – I’m worth it. And I can take care of myself the way no one ever can.”

Like every human being she too has her wild dreams and the most extravagant thing she dreams of having is “I want my very own island!” she exclaims. “It’s going to be my getaway and no one will be allowed to bother me there”. Preity off to Phuket to bring in New Year

She's taking a well-earned vacation. After playing, the derelict NRI wife in Deepa Mehra's Heaven On Earth Preity is off to Phuket with her friends to bring in new year. Last year at this time, Preity injured herself during a vacation.

"2007 has been a tough year for me. Not only did I suffer a serious injury it has also been a year of tough challenges for me as an actor. In 2007 I went into another kind of cinema altogether. From doing Yash Raj Films to playing a woman who finds herself at the receiving end of life in Heaven On Earth has been quite a creative and cultural shock for me," groans Preity.

Preity is however quick to point out the film is not only about a battered wife. "It's about all the people who leave India and hope to find paradise abroad, only to be stuck on wretched 16-hour jobs with no happiness or sunshine. I never knew how such marginalized women existed until I played one. Deepa Mehta and Heaven On Earth have proved eye-openers for me. But the film was tough on me emotionally. In the month that I was in Toronto, I went out just twice and that too only to maintain my sanity. I really need a break now."

Preity returns from her vacation in the second week of January with a clear date diary. "I haven't said yes to any of the scripts I've heard. I'll take a call when I return from my holiday. However, since 2007, has been my year of unconventional films. I hope 2008 will probably be a year of hardcore ‘masala’ movies."

Ness & I are fine: Preity Zinta

The break up rumours about Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia got a huge set back when the duo won the franchisee right for the Indian Premier League team from Mohali in Punjab for $76 million.

The perky actress is currently concentrating on changing her image in bollywood, she has now moved to doing more serious roles as she has reached a different stage in her career.

However there have been rumours that Preity has lately been very busy with work and hence she hardly has time for boyfriend Ness Wadia.

Some sources had claimed that the couple, who has been together for three years, had a spat on the sets of Zinta’s new film Heaven On Earth when she was shooting in Toronto. But Preity claims "Ness and I are together, thank you very much. We are happy. There are no problems between us"

“I don’t know where these stories originate from. A few months ago, it was said that Ness and I were getting married and now it’s being said that he and I have split.” She sarcastically adds.

Preity is making a conscious decision to move away from her glamorous roles right now. She is currently doing a strong role in Deepa Mehta's film where she plays a battered Punjabi wife.

Preity and Amrita Arora at a joint birthday party

Preity Zinta shared her birthday on January 31 with Amrita Arora. Preity was also the surprise guest at Amrita's theme party on the night of Jan 30. The two Aquarian girls even cut a cake together.

Says Preity, "Amrita is a really sweet girl and she has been inviting me every year in order to celebrate our birthday together. This year I said I had to go. Besides it was a theme party…wigs and hats. And I love hats. I am a very hat person. So I went in one of my favourite hats. Thank God I didn't wear the big blonde wig as I was planning to. Because the whole industry was there. How would I've looked?"

The fun-loving Aquarian side to Preity remains predominant. "All us Aquarians are gregarious and hassle-free. Maybe Abhishek, Urmila, Amrita, and I can have a collective birthday party next year. We are all chatterboxes. But I'm now learning to listen more carefully." Preity remains intact although she's now, in her own words, a better listener. "I have to be. I'm in all these board meetings for my cricket deal. And there I better shut up and listen. There's so much to learn."

Preity was in fact in a series of meetings on the eve of her birthday. "But on my birthday I've just decided to chill out. I'm at home watching a DVD, relaxing sleeping. Last year was a sad birthday for me. My dog had died. This year I've lots to look forward to. And I'm happy. The only thing that irritates me is the constant reference to my age from media persons."

Preity Zinta visits Vaishnodevi shrine

Jammu (PTI): Bollywood actress Preity Zinta on Wednesdayvisited Vaishnodevi shrine and performed puja there despite snowfall at several places in the area.

Preity arrived in Katra on Tuesday and later went on a horse to Bhawan even as it was snowing enroute to the cave shrine, official sources said.

She had darshan in the morning and took part in the aarti, they said, adding she returned Mumbai later.

The cave shrine has experienced heavy snowfall and cold conditions recently, leading to decline in number of pilgrims to the shrine. Snowfall was experienced in Adhkuwari, lower Adhkuwari, Sanjji Chhat, Bhawan and Behro Ghati.

The daily turn-out of visitors to the shrine, which was about 10,000 a few days ago, has come down to around 2000 to 3000 in the past two days, they said.

However, yatra is still on and measures are being taken to give better facilities to the pilgrims to fight cold conditions, they said. Pilgrims have been advised to bring with themselves warm clothings, jackets and sweaters.

Business woman Preity Zinta

Actress-turned-businesswoman Preity Zinta who, along with her partner Ness Wadia and two others, has cut a lucrative deal for the Indian Premier League (IPL), says she wants to succeed in her endeavour.

The actress, who was last seen in "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom", told IANS: "When I do anything in life for the first time, I want to succeed. I'm very lucky to have such a competent group of partners. Not just Ness, who's much more than my business partner.

"Then there're Karan Paul and Mohit Puri - very reputed and solid businessmen. We're all going to contribute in our own ways. It's our dream to be a part of the cricket team. And we'll focus on the spirit of sportsmanship. Of course, it's finally about numbers."

Interestingly, this isn't the first time Preity is doing business with Ness.

"Go Air, which I endorse, is doing so well. I'm so excited. I haven't been able to sleep. I've got dark circles around my eyes. I've forgotten I'm an actress and I need to look after myself.

"It's very different from working on a film where you're on your own when 'action' is called on camera. In a boardroom, there's constant conference and multi-tasking. The creative process is different in both the spheres."

Preity won the IPL bid for the Mohali team for a whopping Rs.3 billion. So does that strike as a good number?

"Well, if we play we might as well play big. But, honestly, I believe cricket to be truly a gentleman's sport, regardless of winning and losing. No point in negative competition. The good thing about this deal is that it will enhance domestic cricket, which in turn will enhance our reputation internationally."

Preity, who turns 33 on Jan 31, was planning a big birthday party.

"But now, with all this happening, I'll have to delay it a little bit. It's suddenly sunk into me that I need to get seriously creative. My partners have left all the creative decisions to me. I need to build a solid team of creative people. I feel every woman should feel good for me. It's 2008! Women should get more active in business."

Preity plays a 'bad' actress

Arshad Warsi and Preity Zinta share an identical predicament. They've to play 'bad' actors in their latest films. While in Anil Kapoor's production, Shortcut, Arshad plays bad actor, in Rituparno Ghosh's Last Lear Preity is cast as a bad actress.

That isn't the only problem the actress had to face. Preity had a very real problem on the sets of Jahnu Barua's Harr Pal. Pritam Chakraborty has done the music score. Every time someone mentioned his name she thought they were calling out to her, because Pritam is the name given to her by Bobby Deol.

Harr Pal has been one of Preity’s toughest roles ever. But the role of the Punjabi NRI wife in Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth has been her toughest yet. She's still carrying the invisible wounds of the battered wives' character. The shooting was wrapped up on Sunday.

Doing Rituparno Ghosh's Last Lear posed its own problems for Preity. She had never worn a sari or a bindi in her life. "Suddenly Ritu-da asked me to stick on bindis that were almost as large as my face. Initially, I was most reluctant. But then I surrendered completely to his vision. I'm actually looking pretty in Last Lear." Even the international critics have noticed. The reviews make a special mention of Preity.

In its review, Variety mentions, "It's an interesting paradox to watch a star like Zinta deliver a good performance as a woman who's widely known as a bad thespian."

Preity Zinta does 'bhangra' on the streets

It's time for the Dil Se girl to celebrate. The reason being the launch of her IPL team Mohali, for the Twenty-20's inaugural tournament. She was accompanied by her beau Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul. Preity and gang have started off with a SMS campaign for naming the still-unnamed Mohali team. The pretty Preity said that it's the love for the game of cricket that has got all of them together.

And with Tom Moody being roped in as its coach and Yuvraj Singh leading the gang (as the team's captain), Preity is pretty much confident that the Mohali team will win the inaugural Twenty-20 match.

Прити Зинта – Шайни Ахуджа: холодная война

Похоже у Прити и Шайни отношения на съемочной площадке не сложились. Ходят слухи, что актриса пообещала больше не иметь дела с Шайни, но сейчас старается не давать волю эмоциям, чтобы закончить фильм "Jhanu Barua's Har Pal", в котором они снимаются вместе. Первоначально они очень хорошо друг к другу относились, но в настоящий момент атмосфера накалена до предела.

Одна из причин в том, что Шайни постоянно требует переснимать дубли, в то время как Прити уверена в том, что самый удачный для нее дубль - первый. Кроме того, актриса очень пунктуальна, в то время как Шайни не только постоянно опаздывает на съемки, но и тратит очень много времени на то, чтобы прочитать сценарий и ввойти в нужное настроение. Их стили работы диаметрально противоположны.

Но недавно выходка Шайни вывела их отношения на уровень открытой вражды. Во время съемок драматической сцены, где по сценарию требовались объятия, Шайни так сильно сжал Прити, что она закричала.

Попытка актера обратить дело в шутку не удалась - Прити назвала его поведение отвратительным и теперь избегает любых встреч с ним.
